SYNOPSIS
Chela and Chiquita, both descended from wealthy families in Asunción, Paraguay, have been together as a couple for over 30 years. But recently their financial situation has worsened and they begin selling off their inherited possessions. But when their debts lead to Chiquita being imprisoned on fraud charges, Chela is forced to face a new reality.
Driving for the first time in years, she begins to provide a local taxi service to a group of elderly wealthy ladies.
As Chela settles into her new life, she encounters the much younger Angy, forging a fresh and invigorating new connection. Chela finally begins to break out of her shell and engage with the world, embarking on her own personal, intimate revolution.
‘A finely-crafted, beautifully realized debut that exquisitely balances character study with shrewd commentary on class, desire, and the lingering privileges of Paraguay’s elite’ writes Jay Weissberg.
‘A story about losing and finding romance but choosing independence instead, this deeply felt Paraguayan drama shines a light on the nation’s fractured identity by crossing numerous generational and class divides’ writes Patrick Gamble.
‘A hulking old Mercedes becomes both a vestige of lost financial security and a vehicle for emancipation in this quiet drama about a middle-class Paraguayan woman set adrift’ writes David Rooney.
‘Belatedness is also part of what makes it so reparative and creative as well, in one of the most beautiful testaments to cinema I’ve seen in a long time.’ writes Billly Stenvenson.
‘While they seem to have outlived their best of times, the two privileged women at the center of Paraguayan director Marcelo Martinessi’s compelling debut have definitely reached a worst of times moment’ writes Nicholas Bell.
‘Amid the sound and fury of a thousand and one ambitious cinematic epics, it’s refreshing to find a film as serene as The Heiresses.’ writes Hannah Woodhead.
‘The director holds his frames long enough to suggest a still life. Chela’s life, like her art, is frozen.’ writes Baradwaj Rangan.

(As the main releases and festivals screenings have now ended, this agenda will no longer be updated. Thanks for your support!)
‘A Surprising Drama of Status and Sexuality’ writes AO Scott for The New York Times
‘Underneath the film's quiet is a heaving ocean of longing, restlessness, melancholy’ writes Sheila O’Malley for Roger Ebert.
‘A perceptive study of class, sexuality and personal awakening’ writes Justing Chang for The Los Angeles Times
‘Finely crafted, beautifully realized debut by Marcelo Martinessi feels so organic and personal’ writes Jay Weissberg
‘Perhaps most importantly, Martinessi and his cast and crew deserve great praise for making a quietly revolutionary movie’ writes Brian T. Carney for Washington Blade
‘It’s an assured future debut and it isn't too much of a stretch to see Chela's late flowering as analogous to Paraguay's bright future on the screen’ writes David Hughes.
‘Paraguayan director Marcelo Martinessi strikes an exquisitely melancholic note with his female-centric debut feature, starring an impressive Ana Brun as a woman facing a disturbingly uncertain future’ writes Maria Delgado
‘The stars of the movie are two wealthy women, the heiresses Chela and Chiquita, superbly played by Paraguayan stage actors Ana Brun and Margarita Irun, who almost incredibly are making their screen debut’ writes Peter Bradshaw.
‘Slow-moving, poised, encouragingly humane and entirely female-led, it’s almost Bergman-esque in its portrayal of the big little things that affect and direct every long-term relationship’ writes Barry Didcock.
‘A superb first feature from Marcelo Martinessi, this entirely female-driven story is full of gentle wit and playful observations on the crumbling upper echelons of Paraguayan society’ writes Wendy Ide.
‘The Heiresses is a tickling, near-perfect tragicomedy from Paraguay. The nuances are so fine you could slip them between adjacent atoms’ writes Nigel Andrews.
‘This is definitely the best film about an ageing Paraguayan lesbian couple you’ll see this year. It’s also one of the best films of any sort you’ll see’ writes Ed Potton.
